HMong Evangelical Lutheran Church
The HMong population in the Twin Cities is estimated to be at 60,000
people which makes it the largest HMong population in the United States.
The majority of HMong people practice the traditional religion of Animism
which is a belief that a spirit or divinity resides within every object
controlling its existence and influencing human life and events in the
natural world.

In the late 1970s, Lutheran missionaries began working with isolated pockets
of HMong people in the Twin Cities and held worship at both the Bethel
Lutheran Church in St. Paul and the Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.
In June of 1986, the two ministries joined together to form the HMong Evangelical
Lutheran Church. The congregation joined the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod
and began offering regular Sunday services at the Jehovah Lutheran Church in
St. Paul's Hamline-Midway district.
The HMong Evangelical Lutheran Church currently serves approximately 250 people
and is led by the Rev. L Kou Seying (Thao), the first HMong pastor ordained in
the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
